Assignment 7: Children's Storybook

Our last and final assignment: a children's storybook.

I would say this is by far the most challenging and demanding assignment we have till date.

My team and i decided to narrow down our objectives for our storybook to children aged 6 to 7, which is the age where most kids transit from kindergarten to mainstream primary school.

By having a clearer objective and target audience in mind, every member in the team will share a common frequency when we are brainstorming for our storyline and character-forming.

it will also give us a bigger picture of what kind of finishing we want our storybook to have.

we decided to come up with a book that helps to teach children aged 6-7 some basic manners and inculcate some values like fillial piety and honesty.

this is important as these kids are embarking into a new journey of their lives as primary school children and most of them are very impressionable at this age.

here are some sketches:

it has since been scanned and coloured, paginated and sent for printing.

will be collecting the final product today!

Assignment 6: Gestalt's Principles

For this last assignment before we embark on our final project, we were taught the Gestalt's Principles.

This set of principles consists of a few key criteria, which is used to evaluate a design's effectiveness.

My partner and I had chosen to analyse the following 2 posters:

The "not so good" one.

The "better looking" one.

The choice of these 2 posters were made because we decided to shift our focus on the theme of wine and dine, food and clubbing.

For the pink one, it takes a very minimalist style, simply using pink and different shades of white.

This choice of colour further accentuates the figure and ground of the words against the background.

But for the white one, there are too many items with different colours and shapes and they are all fighting for attention.

The key message, which is to show that it is a bistro that provides food and wine is not communicated visually.

On the whole, the pink one communicates a very clear and concise message, which is the time, event and price of the admission to their club while the white poster is perceived as too cluttered, very hard to decipher wat is it trying to say.

Thus, we came to a conclusion that the pink poster fulfills most of Gestalt's principles to be what it means to be a "better design".
